HIGHLY illogical Doctor!
A dial-faced letter chart would have solve this.
With the needle moving slowly past each letter, Capt. Pike could "beep" each time the arrow pointed to a relevant letter needed to make a statement.
In a few minutes a sentence could be formed & communication could be established.
